What is Kapok?
Soft, Lightweight, & Perfect for Everyday Wear
Experience the unmatched softness and eco-friendly charm of our Kapok collection—sustainably crafted for comfort and care, both for you and the planet. Once unsuitable for yarn, kapok has gained attention as new technologies now enable its use in sustainable spinning, weaving, and apparel production.
Sustainable Fiber
Kapok is derived from the tall deciduous trees native to Indonesia, Thailand, and India, where it thrives with minimal intervention. These trees grow naturally with sunlight and rainwater, requiring little to no pesticides, fertilizers, or excessive watering. On Java Island, Indonesia, MUJI cultivates kapok in near-natural conditions, with trees systematically planted at intervals of about 5 meters.
Gentle On The Planet
Unlike cotton or linen, kapok harvesting does not involve mowing the plant. Instead, the trees continue to grow taller and larger, contributing to the environment by absorbing carbon dioxide and converting it into oxygen. The entire tree performs photosynthesis, making kapok forests a powerful ally in reducing CO2 and combating global warming.
